Keeping a fuel log

With Berta's fuel log you keep an eye on consumption and fuel costs – for a car, motorcycle or camper alike. Record every fill-up with its liters and price – by photographing the receipt, by keyboard, or by voice. From at least two fill-ups with odometer readings, Berta calculates your average consumption in l/100 km.

How do I record a fill-up?

You have three routes:

1. Photo: photograph the fuel receipt; Berta reads out the values if you've given AI consent.
2. Keyboard: enter liters, price and odometer manually.
3. Voice: speak the liters and the price or total – in the app and on the web. Berta needs at least the liters plus either the price per liter or the total.

Include the odometer reading with every fill-up – it's the basis for the consumption calculation.

How does Berta calculate average consumption?

Average consumption in l/100 km appears once at least two fill-ups with odometer readings exist. Berta works out the distance driven between the readings and relates it to the fuel added. The more regularly you record the odometer, the more accurate the figure.

Why don't I see a consumption figure yet?

If it's missing, you've probably only recorded one fill-up with an odometer reading – or forgotten the odometer on one fill-up. Include the odometer on your next fill-ups, and Berta will calculate consumption automatically.

Which units and currencies are there?

Berta supports metric and imperial units. For currencies you can choose EUR (default), CHF and USD. Set both to match your country so prices and consumption display correctly.

EVs and plug-in hybrids: recording charging sessions

If you drive an electric car, Berta offers a charging receipt instead of the fuel receipt when you capture; plug-in hybrids get both routes. A charging entry stores the energy charged in kWh and – optionally – the price per kWh, the total, whether you charged publicly or at home, and the name of the charge point.

You can photograph charging receipts too. Berta recognizes receipts from the common charging networks (including Ionity, EnBW, Tesla, Shell, Fastned and Maingau) as well as wallbox and electricity statements, and reads out date, kWh, price per kWh, total and operator. As with every scan, you check the values and confirm before anything is saved.

Charging sessions appear in the timeline with their own icon. For battery-electric cars, Berta hides the fuel filter so the view matches your vehicle.

THG quota: reminder and payout

For battery-electric cars registered in Germany, Berta automatically creates a yearly reminder to apply for the THG quota (Treibhausgasquote) – by default on 15 November, repeating every 12 months. Plug-in hybrids don't get it, because the quota only applies to battery-electric vehicles. You apply yourself through a provider of your choice; Berta only reminds you of the deadline in good time.

Once the payout arrives, record it as a cost event in the "THG quota (credit)" category. Berta books it as a credit: it lowers your total costs and shows up that way in the costs tab and the year in review.

Nearby fuel prices (Germany)

For vehicles registered in Germany, Berta shows current fuel prices from the official reporting data (Tankerkönig/MTS-K). It uses your location or – if you'd rather not share it – a German five-digit postal code. Berta lists stations within a 5 km radius sorted by distance (at most 25), with brand, address, distance, open/closed status and the prices for E5, E10 and diesel.

Optionally, you can be alerted to cheap prices: the alert fires when the price is 3, 5 or 8 cents below the rolling average. And after a fill-up no more than seven days old, Berta puts the price per liter you paid in context against the current average of open stations nearby.

Live fuel prices are currently available for Germany only; in other countries Berta hides the view.

Where do I see my fuel costs?

Your monthly fuel costs and further breakdowns live in the costs tab: monthly cost bars, average consumption, cost per km, monthly fuel cost and total costs. More under Costs.

What happens offline?

If you record a fill-up without an internet connection, it waits in the queue and is re-sent automatically once you're back online. No duplicates are created. So you can capture right at the pump, even with no signal.

How do I keep my fuel log clean?

For meaningful figures it pays to record consistently. Enter as many fill-ups as you can and don't forget the odometer, since it's the basis of the consumption calculation. If you capture by photo with AI consent, quickly double-check the highlighted low-confidence fields before you save. That prevents transposed digits that would distort your average consumption – and your fuel log stays reliable over time.
