Car sharing and invites
Share a vehicle with a partner or family member via an invite link or code. Up to 5 members see the full record; only the owner invites and removes members.
Car sharing lets an owner give a partner or family member access to a vehicle's full record – without handing over ownership. You send an invite; once it's redeemed, the vehicle appears in both garages.
How do I share my car with someone?
Open the vehicle, go to Sharing, and tap Send invite. Berta creates a single-use invite good for 72 hours and gives you a link to share (by message, email, however you like); the same invite also has a short code as a manual fallback. Anyone who opens the link joins the car directly – no code to type.
How does the other person join?
If they open the invite link in the app while signed in, the shared vehicle is added to their garage right away – that's the whole flow. If they aren't signed in yet, Berta remembers the invite through sign-in/sign-up and redeems it automatically afterwards. Without a link at all, they can enter the code by hand under Join a shared vehicle in the app.
An invite can only be redeemed once, only before it expires, and not by the vehicle's own owner. A code that's invalid, already used, or expired shows a clear error instead of silently failing.
What can a member do compared to the owner?
Once someone joins, the vehicle shows up as Shared in their garage. Members see and use the same record as the owner: entries, reminders, tires, costs, documents – and can add new ones. What stays owner-only:
- Sending new invites and revoking pending ones.
- Removing a member from the vehicle.
- Handing the vehicle over to a new owner (see the handover flow for that).
A member can always see who else has access, under Who has access on the Sharing screen.
How many people can share one vehicle?
Up to 5 members can join a vehicle in addition to its owner – 6 people in total. Once a vehicle reaches that limit, further invite codes can't be redeemed until a member leaves or is removed.
How do I remove someone or leave a shared vehicle?
From the Sharing screen, the owner can remove any member at any time; the member loses access to the vehicle immediately. A member can leave the same way from their own side. Either way, the vehicle disappears from that person's garage, but nothing is deleted – the full record stays intact with the owner.
Can I revoke an invite before it's used?
Yes. Invites you've sent but that haven't been redeemed yet are listed under Pending invites on the Sharing screen, where you can revoke one to invalidate its link and code immediately. Even without revoking, an unused invite simply expires after 72 hours.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I share my car with someone?
- Open Sharing for the vehicle and send an invite. Berta creates a link (and a code as a fallback) valid for 72 hours; share it however you like. Opening the link in the app joins the car directly.
- How does the other person join?
- They open the invite link in the app – if they're signed in, the vehicle is added to their garage immediately. Without the link, they can enter the code manually under Join a shared vehicle.
- What can a member do compared to the owner?
- Members see the same vehicle record – entries, reminders, tires, costs – and can add data. Only the owner can invite new people, remove a member, revoke a pending invite, or hand the vehicle to a new owner.
- How many people can share one vehicle?
- Up to 5 members can join, in addition to the owner – 6 people in total.
- How do I remove someone or leave a shared vehicle?
- The owner removes a member from the Sharing screen at any time. A member leaves the same screen themselves; the vehicle then disappears from their garage, but the records stay with the owner.
- Can I revoke an invite before it's used?
- Yes, as long as it hasn't been redeemed. Pending invites are listed under Sharing with a revoke option, and unused invites expire after 72 hours anyway.
